Knowing first-hand how the loss and trauma affect children, I was inspired when I met Joseph Akol Makeer, a Lost Boy of Sudan with a dream. Along with a team of dedicated volunteers, we traveled to Sudan to make a documentary to tell this story.

African Soul, American Heart tells how one Fargo, North Dakota New American, a Sudanese Lost Boy who survived against all odds to thrive in his adopted country, dreams of using his education to bring aid to his homeland, a region devastated by war for over twenty years. Still caring for younger siblings; married and father to three children born since his arrival in the US in 2003, he returns to South Sudan to determine how he can help the orphaned children who live in the village where he was born.
